In early childhood, play is more than just fun it’s fundamental to mental health, emotional growth, and well-being. Through play, young children explore emotions, develop social skills, build resilience, and express themselves in safe, meaningful ways. In fact, play-based learning offers a powerful tool for supporting the whole child; body, mind, and spirit. Research by the Canadian Paediatric Society (2021) highlights that unstructured play is crucial for promoting brain development, stress management, and social skill-building in young children.
When children engage in imaginative, sensory, or dramatic play, they are actively working through big feelings, testing boundaries, and learning how to manage conflict, frustration, and change. These experiences help lay the foundation for emotional regulation, empathy, and healthy relationships. According to the Centre on the Developing Child at Harvard University, these early relational experiences shape the architecture of the developing brain; particularly in the areas responsible for emotional and behavioural regulation. Whether it’s building with blocks, caring for dolls, creating art, or playing outdoors in nature, these activities create space for connection, problem-solving, and joy! All of which are essential to a child’s mental health.

One of the most impactful ways to support children’s mental health is by helping them learn how to name and manage their emotions. Social emotional learning (SEL) happens naturally through play, where children are free to act out scenarios, express emotions, and explore consequences in a developmentally appropriate way. The Collaborative for Academic, Social, and Emotional Learning (CASEL) notes that children who engage in regular SEL activities show improved classroom behaviour, stronger emotional resilience, and better academic performance.
For example, calming sensory bins, pretend play in a calm corner, or story-based games with puppets can support self-regulation and help children identify feelings like anger, sadness, or excitement.By integrating fidget tools, mindfulness games, role-play, and collaborative problem-solving activities into your daily routines, educators can create a culture of care and understanding—one that helps children feel safe, seen, and supported.

In early childhood classrooms, a play-rich environment helps reduce stress and anxiety, especially for children who are neurodiverse or experiencing challenges at home. Open-ended play invitations, quiet spaces, sensory tools, and outdoor time are all valuable components of a mentally healthy learning space. A 2023 study published in the journal Early Child Development and Care found that children who spent time engaged in outdoor play demonstrated lower cortisol levels, better mood regulation, and increased attention spans.
Most importantly, educators who validate emotions, model regulation strategies, and offer compassionate guidance empower children to thrive socially and emotionally.
The World Health Organization also emphasizes the role of safe, nurturing environments as a foundational protective factor in early childhood mental health.
When we prioritize play-based learning, we’re not just teaching academic concepts, we’re nurturing the mental health and emotional well-being of our youngest learners. Through play, children discover who they are, how to relate to others, and how to manage the ups and downs of life. Dr. Stuart Shanker, Canadian expert on self-regulation, reminds us that “play is not a luxury—it’s how children learn to calm themselves, connect with others, and grow into resilient, capable learners.”
For educators and parents alike, embracing play is one of the most powerful things we can do to help children grow into confident, resilient, and emotionally healthy individuals.
