When adults think about learning, we often picture children sitting at a table, listening to an educator, practising letters and numbers, completing a worksheet or working toward a clearly defined outcome. In early childhood, however, some of the most meaningful learning rarely looks this formal.
It looks like a child carefully balancing one block on top of another and rebuilding when the tower tumbles. It looks like children creating a pretend restaurant, deciding who will cook, who will serve and what should go on the menu. It looks like pouring water between containers, mixing mud and leaves, arranging stones into patterns, painting with unusual tools, building a road for toy vehicles or transforming a cardboard box into something entirely new.
From the outside, these experiences may appear to be simply play. But underneath that play is an extraordinary amount of thinking, experimenting, communicating, problem solving and development.
This is why early childhood educators often say that play is the work of the child.
Play is not a break from learning. Play is not what children do once the “real work” is complete. During the early years, play is one of the most natural, meaningful and developmentally appropriate ways children learn about themselves, other people and the world around them.
Through play-based learning, children are developing language and literacy, early mathematical thinking, scientific inquiry, creativity, physical skills, social competence, emotional regulation, independence and confidence. Just as importantly, they are developing the dispositions that support learning over a lifetime: curiosity, persistence, imagination, flexibility and the willingness to try an idea without knowing exactly what will happen.

Play-based learning is an approach to early childhood education that recognizes children as capable, curious and active participants in their own learning. Instead of viewing children as empty vessels waiting for adults to fill them with information, play-based learning recognizes that young children are constantly constructing understanding through their experiences.
Children learn by touching, moving, questioning, testing, repeating, observing, pretending and interacting with other people. They need opportunities to take an idea and explore it from different directions. They need time to become deeply involved in an experience rather than moving rapidly from one adult-directed task to another.
In a play-based environment, learning may begin with something as simple as a child's interest in rolling a ball down a ramp. Rather than immediately turning that interest into a formal lesson, an educator might observe what the child is doing and introduce additional materials. Perhaps different-sized balls are added. Blocks are provided so the height of the ramp can be changed. Measuring tapes appear nearby. The educator might wonder aloud, “What do you think would happen if the ramp were higher?”
The play remains engaging and meaningful to the child, but the possibilities for learning expand.
This is one of the important distinctions within high-quality play-based learning. It is not simply about putting out toys and allowing children to occupy themselves. Educators are observing, reflecting, introducing possibilities, supporting relationships, asking thoughtful questions and creating environments that encourage deeper investigation.
Sometimes educators join children's play. Sometimes they model a new skill. Sometimes they introduce new vocabulary or provide a material that extends an idea. And sometimes the most intentional choice an educator can make is to step back and allow children the time they need to figure something out for themselves.
The idea that play is the work of childhood helps us reconsider what productive learning looks like in the early years.
A child who is building a tower may appear to be “just stacking blocks,” but watch closely and a much richer learning process becomes visible. The child is considering which block to use next, judging its size and shape, figuring out where it might balance and adjusting the structure as it grows. If the tower collapses, the child encounters a genuine problem.
Why did it fall?
Should the base be wider?
Was one side too heavy?
Would another block work better?
Should the structure be shorter?
The child may not use those exact words, but the thinking is happening.
Within that one experience are early concepts related to mathematics, physics, engineering, spatial awareness, cause and effect, balance and measurement. At the same time, the child is practising concentration, persistence, frustration tolerance and flexible thinking.
The learning exists not only in the finished tower, but in everything the child had to think about and do in order to create it.
This is an important shift for adults. We often pay attention to the outcome: the painting, the structure, the completed puzzle or the finished creation. In play-based learning, the process matters just as much as the product.
What did the child wonder?
What decisions did they make?
What changed?
What problem did they encounter?
How did their thinking evolve?
These are the moments where deep learning lives.
Early childhood is a period of remarkable development. Young children are rapidly building language, strengthening their bodies, developing relationships, learning to regulate emotions and beginning to understand increasingly complex ideas.
These areas of development do not occur separately.
A child does not stop developing socially while learning mathematics, or stop using language while exploring science. Development is deeply interconnected, and play reflects this beautifully.
Imagine several children building a large structure together. They might count blocks and compare heights, bringing mathematics into the experience. They may test whether a bridge can support an object, introducing engineering and scientific thinking. They need to explain their ideas, listen to one another and negotiate how the structure should be built, supporting communication and social development. When part of the structure collapses, they must cope with disappointment, adapt their plan and try again.
One play experience can support many areas of early childhood development at once.
That is part of the power of play-based learning. It reflects the way young children naturally learn.
One of the most important things children are developing during the early years is not simply a collection of facts. They are developing the mental processes that help them become increasingly independent learners.
These include abilities such as paying attention, remembering information, planning what to do, controlling impulses, shifting strategies when circumstances change and persisting when something is difficult.
Children practise these abilities constantly through play.
Consider a group of children creating an elaborate pretend veterinary clinic. They need to remember the roles they have chosen and the story they are creating together. They may need to wait while another child uses a particular prop. They must adjust when a new child joins the play and introduces a different idea. They need to communicate, negotiate and keep the shared storyline going.
This type of play requires significant cognitive and social work.
These experiences support executive functioning and self-regulation, two areas that contribute to children's ability to participate successfully in learning environments. Rather than developing these skills through isolated exercises, children are practising them in situations that are meaningful to them.

One of the richest features of children's play is the amount of meaningful language it naturally creates.
Children talk because they have something they want to communicate.
They tell another child where the block should go. They explain the rules of their pretend game. They negotiate who gets to be the doctor. They tell a story about the small world figures they are moving through a miniature landscape. They create signs, menus, maps, lists and invitations because those forms of communication serve a real purpose within their play.
This is language and literacy development in a deeply authentic context.
A child who is pretending to run a restaurant may ask someone what they would like to order, attempt to write it down, count out pretend food and create a sign for the restaurant. Within a single dramatic play experience, the child is experimenting with vocabulary, conversation, symbolic representation, early writing and numeracy.
Instead of practising literacy as a disconnected skill, children begin to understand why people read, write, speak and listen.
Language becomes a tool for participating in the world.
Young children encounter mathematical thinking throughout the day, often long before an adult identifies it as “math.”
A child pouring water from one container into another is beginning to explore ideas related to capacity and volume. A child arranging natural materials into groups may be sorting and classifying. A block structure requires children to think about shape, size, position and spatial relationships. Setting a table in dramatic play involves counting, one-to-one correspondence and matching.
Children may compare which tower is taller, decide whether there are enough plates for everyone or notice that one container holds more sand than another.
These moments help mathematical ideas become concrete.
Rather than encountering mathematics only as numbers printed on a page, children experience what quantity, measurement, pattern, comparison and spatial reasoning actually mean.
Play gives them something to think about before they are expected to represent those ideas abstractly.
Young children are natural investigators.
They constantly ask questions through their actions.
What happens if I drop this?
Why did that sink?
Can I make the water move faster?
What happens if I mix these two colours?
How can I stop the bridge from falling?
Scientific thinking begins with curiosity, and play gives children space to follow that curiosity.
During open-ended exploration, children make predictions, test ideas, observe what happens and revise their thinking. They often repeat an action many times, not because they are doing “the same thing,” but because each repetition helps them understand the experience more deeply.
A child repeatedly rolling objects down a ramp may be comparing speed, shape and distance. A child experimenting with ice is exploring temperature and change. A child mixing water into soil may be observing consistency, absorption and transformation.
These are the beginnings of inquiry.
Children are learning that questions can be explored, ideas can be tested and knowledge can grow through investigation.
Learning how to participate in relationships is a major part of early childhood development, and much of this learning happens through play.
When children play together, they have to consider more than their own ideas.
They learn to communicate what they want. They encounter different perspectives. They experience disagreement. They practise waiting, sharing, negotiating and making compromises.
A group of children building together may have several different ideas about what they are creating. One child may want a zoo, another a castle and another a road. Working out what happens next becomes part of the play.
These moments are not interruptions to learning. They are learning.
With appropriate support, children begin to understand that other people have ideas and feelings that may be different from their own. They learn to express frustration in more constructive ways, ask for help, repair relationships and participate in shared experiences.
These skills develop gradually and require repeated practice in real social situations.
Play provides those opportunities every day.

Creativity is not limited to painting and drawing. It is the ability to imagine possibilities, generate ideas, combine information in new ways and approach problems flexibly.
Open-ended play naturally encourages this kind of thinking.
When children are given materials that do not have only one correct use, they have to decide what those materials could become.
A wooden disc might become a cookie, a coin, a wheel or a stepping stone. A piece of fabric might become a cape, a picnic blanket, the roof of a den or the ocean in a small world scene. A cardboard box can become almost anything.
This freedom invites children to think beyond what is immediately visible.
It also allows children to experience ownership over their ideas.
When adults consistently demonstrate exactly what children should make or how they should use a material, children can begin to focus on reproducing the adult's idea. When children are allowed to explore, transform and invent, they begin to trust their own thinking.
They learn that there is not always one correct answer.
They learn that their ideas matter.
Early childhood development is physical as well as cognitive.
Children need opportunities to run, climb, lift, carry, dig, push, pull, balance and move their bodies in varied ways. These experiences strengthen muscles, improve coordination, develop body awareness and build confidence in movement.
Outdoor play is particularly valuable because it offers challenges that are often less predictable than indoor environments. Uneven ground, logs, slopes, natural materials and changing weather conditions ask children to continually adjust their movements and make decisions about what their bodies can do.
Fine motor development is strengthened in equally playful ways.
Manipulating playdough, turning puzzle pieces, squeezing droppers, threading beads, using tongs, building with small blocks, painting, drawing, fastening doll clothing and arranging loose parts all help build the strength and coordination children eventually need for writing, self-care and everyday tasks.
Before a child is ready to produce controlled marks with a pencil, their hands, fingers, wrists, shoulders and core have been developing through years of movement and play.
Another powerful benefit of play is that it allows children to make meaningful decisions.
Children choose what to explore, how to use materials, what role they want to take, what problem they want to solve and whether an idea needs to change.
This develops agency: the understanding that their choices and actions can influence what happens.
Agency is deeply connected to confidence.
When a child encounters a problem and an adult immediately solves it, the problem disappears quickly. But the child loses the opportunity to discover what they are capable of.
If the adult instead offers time, encouragement and an open-ended question, the child has an opportunity to think.
They may struggle.
They may try an idea that does not work.
They may change direction.
They may eventually find a solution.
That process helps children develop the belief:
“I can figure things out.”
This mindset is far more valuable than always having someone provide the correct answer.
Because play can look spontaneous, there is sometimes a misconception that play-based learning requires less teaching.
In reality, skilled early childhood educators are making thoughtful decisions throughout the day.
They observe carefully. They notice what children return to repeatedly, what questions seem to be emerging and where children may need additional support or challenge. They select materials intentionally and arrange environments in ways that invite exploration.
Educators listen to children's conversations and use those observations to understand what children are thinking.
They may introduce language that helps a child describe an experience more precisely. They may add a book, photograph, measuring tool, natural material or new loose part that extends an investigation. They may model a social strategy when children are struggling to resolve a disagreement.
Importantly, educators also learn when not to intervene.
A child working through a difficult problem may not need an adult to make the task easier. They may simply need time.
The educator's role is not to control every learning experience, but to create the conditions in which meaningful learning can happen.

Adults often want to help children succeed, and our instinct may be to step in quickly when something is difficult.
But sometimes the struggle is where the learning lives.
Imagine a child trying to balance several pieces of wood across two blocks to create a bridge. Each time the child adds another object, the bridge collapses.
An adult could immediately demonstrate the correct way to build it.
Or the adult might ask, “What do you notice about what keeps happening?”
That question invites the child back into the problem.
Perhaps the child moves the blocks closer together. Perhaps they change the material being used for the bridge. Perhaps they reduce the amount of weight placed on top.
Each attempt gives the child more information.
Eventually, whether the bridge works or not, the child has experienced the process of problem solving.
This is an important distinction in play-based learning. Our goal is not simply to help children arrive at correct answers as quickly as possible. Our goal is to help children become thoughtful, confident learners who know how to approach uncertainty.
The importance of play is strongly reflected in early childhood research and professional guidance.
Research consistently associates developmentally appropriate play with children's cognitive, language, social, emotional and physical development. Playful experiences provide opportunities for children to develop executive functioning, self-regulation, problem solving, communication and creativity while building positive relationships with adults and peers.
Within Canadian early childhood education, this understanding is also reflected in pedagogical frameworks such as Ontario's How Does Learning Happen?, which positions children as competent, capable, curious and rich in potential. Its foundations of belonging, well-being, engagement and expression reinforce the idea that meaningful learning develops through relationships, exploration, inquiry and play.
This research matters because it helps us look beyond the surface of children's activity.
A child who spends a long period deeply engaged with blocks is not “missing” an academic lesson.
The block play may be the lesson.
A child immersed in dramatic play is not simply filling time.
They may be developing sophisticated language and social understanding.
A child who repeats the same water experiment over and over is not necessarily stuck.
They may be gathering information.
When we understand how young children learn, we begin to see play differently.

One of the most common questions children hear at the end of their day is, “What did you do today?”
Often their answer is wonderfully simple.
“I played.”
For families, that answer may not reveal the depth of what occurred.
During that play, a child may have negotiated with friends, counted objects, strengthened their hands, created a story, tested an engineering idea, managed frustration, learned new words, made a prediction, experienced disappointment, solved a problem and tried again.
They may have been a scientist while exploring water.
An engineer while building.
A mathematician while arranging loose parts.
An author while creating a pretend story.
An artist while investigating paint.
A leader, collaborator and friend while playing with others.
The boundaries between these identities do not matter to the child.
They simply experience the joy and challenge of exploring their world.
Supporting play-based learning at home does not require elaborate toys, expensive resources or carefully planned activities.
In fact, some of the richest play experiences begin with very simple materials.
Cardboard boxes, fabric, blocks, recycled containers, playdough, water, stones, sticks, pinecones, art materials and ordinary household objects can become invitations for extraordinary thinking.
What children often need most is not more stuff.
They need time.
Time to become absorbed.
Time to repeat something.
Time to change their minds.
Time to make a mess.
Time to build something that may eventually fall apart.
Time to be unsure.
And time to work through an idea without an adult rushing toward the answer.
Parents can support this learning by becoming curious observers.
Instead of asking, “What are you making?” we might sometimes ask, “Tell me about what you're doing.”
Instead of saying, “Here's how you do it,” we might wonder, “What else could you try?”
Instead of correcting an idea immediately, we can create space for children to test it themselves.
These small changes communicate something powerful to children:
Your ideas are worth exploring.

Childhood is not simply a waiting room for formal education.
The early years are a deeply important stage of development, and children deserve experiences that respect how they naturally learn.
They need opportunities to wonder, move, imagine, communicate, create, investigate, take appropriate risks, make mistakes and try again.
They need relationships with adults who see them as capable learners.
They need environments that invite curiosity rather than demand one predetermined outcome.
And they need time to play.
So the next time a child tells you, “I played today,” consider everything those three words may contain.
They may have been developing language, mathematics, science, creativity, physical competence, self-regulation and social understanding. They may have been making decisions, testing theories, solving problems and discovering what they are capable of.
Most importantly, they were engaged in one of the most powerful forms of learning available to them.
Because play is not separate from learning in early childhood.
Play is how young children learn.
